The Basic Fundamentals of Leadership

Leadership: the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it.  –Dwight D. Eisenhower

Leaders are people who have certain qualities that distinguish them from the crowd. Below are some of the basic fundamentals of leadership:

ABILITY TO SEE A NEED

When Nehemiah heard that the walls of Jerusalem lay in ruins, that its charred gates sat rotting, and that the Jewish survivors lived in distressed and reproach, he saw the need for the rebuilding of the wall of Jerusalem and also to do something to alleviate the great distress and reproach his people were going through.

Nehemiah 1:3-4

New International Version (NIV)

They said to me, “Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire. ”

When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven.

“I always wondered why somebody doesn’t do something about that. Then I realized I was somebody”.-Lily Tomlin

“Be the change you want to see in the world.” Mahatma Gandhi

VISION

Great leaders always have a compelling vision that enables them to succeed. Leadership success always starts with a vision. Henry Ford dreamed of a car families could afford. Steve Jobs dreamed of an easy-to-use computer that would unleash creativity. Nelson Mandela dreamed of an integrated, prosperous South Africa. Nehemiah in the Bible sensed the problem his people where facing in Jerusalem and pictured the solution.

The most pathetic person in the world is someone who has sight, but has no vision.
– Helen Keller

Habakkuk 2:2

New International Version (NIV)

The Lord’s Answer

Then the Lord replied:

“Write down the revelation
and make it plain on tablets
so that a herald[a] may run with it.

Nehemiah 2:4-5

New International Version (NIV)

The king said to me, “What is it you want?”

Then I prayed to the God of heaven, and I answered the king, “If it pleases the king and if your servant has found favor in his sight, let him send me to the city in Judah where my ancestors are buried so that I can rebuild it.”

A PLAN

For the successful execution of a task, there must be a greater preparation which will lead to easier motivation of the people involve. Great leaders know how long a project will take, how to get to the finish line, and know in advance what they will need in terms of personnel, materials and the legal approval to accomplish the task. They make adequate plan and preparation before embarking on the project.

Luke 14:28

New International Version (NIV)

28 “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?

“By failing to prepare you are preparing to fail.” — Benjamin Franklin
